BIG changes

Five years ago I trained as a primary school teacher, and for three and a half of those I genuinely loved my job and everything it involved. The past one and a half years, however, have been different. I’ve slowly found myself falling out of love with the profession. It had become more pen pushing and social work than inspiring young minds.

This Easter (after much discussion with Jonny and my parents) I made a huge decision. A decision that will hopefully change my life for the better. I decided to leave teaching. The one year contract I had at the school I was in wasn’t renewed and I spent a long time struggling to come to terms with this. Fortunately I have the world’s most supportive boyfriend and some fantastic friends that really helped me to deal with this.Change Quote

Once I had decided to stop teaching it felt like an actual weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Ridiculous as that cliché is, that’s really how I felt. I started to begin planning what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Scary times!

I had a BA (Hons) History degree that I had loved so decided that this was the route to follow. I decided that I wanted to pursue a career within the museum/heritage industry. This September I had to sign up to a local supply teaching agency (I still need some income whilst I hunt for the dream!) I also started volunteering as a room guide at Hill Top (home of my childhood hero, Beatrix Potter.) Similarly I pursued a contact from Kids in Museums with the hope of eventually organising and running one of their kids takeover days.

Finally I feel like my life is getting back on track. It didn’t start out as a happy journey but it’s definitely becoming one. The volunteering experience I’m gaining is really useful, and will help my CV show I’m seriously interested in the career change!

Here’s to the next (terrifying/exciting) steps towards the dream job!

Kirsty’s Baby Shower

This weekend I hosted a baby shower for my friend Kirsty. Her little one is due at the end of this month and I am beyond excited to meet him/her! The fact that she hasn’t found out the baby’s sex is making the wait even more exciting!

Baby Shower

I found it a little tricky initially, as I didn’t know if she was having a girl or a boy. In the end I decided to go with pink and blue décor, with some cute yellow polka dot plates (no mummy  to be wants to be washing up after her baby shower!)

I decided to go with an afternoon tea party theme and baked button biscuits, chocolate cupcakes, chocolate dipped strawberries (I also got the dad to be and my own mum to help out on the baking front!)

Using my grandparents’ vintage tea cups and saucers we set about enjoying all the sweet goodies with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks.

I’d made bunting for the baby’s nursery as part of my gift and used that to help decorate, alongside some baby sock bunting (baby socks are the most ridiculously cute items of clothing in existence!)

Another friend of Kirsty’s stepped in with some amazing baby shower games (I’d seriously struggled to find anything that wasn’t either horrific or hugely Americanised!)

I’m fairly sure everyone had a good time and the mummy to be was thoroughly spoiled. Now all we have to do is wait for Baby Wilko to arrive!

Note to self, though, TAKE YOUR CAMERA OUT WITH YOU! Then there’ll be more evidence of my crafty handiwork!

Unfinished Projects

I genuinely love crafting and the chance to be creative. My favourite means of making things are knitting and sewing (with my trusty button covered sewing machine!) I tend to be one of those crafters who gets caught up in the excitement of starting a new creation. As a result I constantly seem to have a never-ending pile of projects!

My current work-in-progress pile consists of:

Pink floral sleeveless shift top. In need of some finishing off stitching around the neck and arms.

Floral Top 1Map print wrap skirt. Again in need of finishing off stitching around the waistband. It’s always the hand stitching that grinds me to a halt on these projects!Map Skirt 1

Coral garter stitch jumper (in beautiful, soft Bergere wool.) Needs hand stitching together.Garter Jumper 1Blue baby jacket. We have 3 friends having babies this year. This is the first of the hand made gifts the little ones.

Baby Jacket 1Purple and cream striped Breton jumper. This is in a gorgeous soft cotton, but feels a bit like the never ending story of knitting after I whizzed through my coral jumper on 9mm needles!Breton 1Blueprint skit. All cut out and ready to go. This’ll be an easy, elastic waist skirt once it’s complete.Blue Print 1The dream is that all these will be finished by the end of October so I can start on my next wish list of projects!

4 Highlights: June 2014

I’ve decided that in my pursuit of a happier life, I’m going to make a list at the end of each month of my 4 highlights. Events that have been really enjoyable, stood out or just made me happy!

Here are my 4 highlights for June:

1: The Fledglings

Having Peter and Fledgey learning how to be grown up birds in our garden was a real privilege. I definitely miss this funny little faces now they’ve flown away to pastures new!

2: Report Writing Finished

I’ve finished what might potentially be my last ever set of school reports. This is a huge relief and something I will definitely not miss about my teaching career!

3: Moonlight Walk

Completing the 14km walk for St John’s Hospice is something I am very proud of. A few years back I would not have even contemplated walking that far, let alone enjoying it!

4: A Family Wedding

Spending last weekend celebrating Katie and Dominic’s wedding with Jonny’s family was a wonderful way to round off June!
