Knitting & Stitching Show 2014

A day out with the mothership is always fun, especially so when it involves something craft-based. Yesterday I went to the Knitting & Stitching show in Harrogate with my mum and had a great day out!

I could quite easily have spent a fortune on pretty buttons and ribbons, and had to restrain myself on more than one occasion.

In the end I came away with Christmas presents for mum and some lovely purple alpaca wool to knit myself some cozy gloves with. I’m definitely one of the ‘cold hands, warm heart’ club.  Once they’re made I’ll make sure to post them on here.

Sunday in Ambleside

This Sunday we drove up into the Lake District to meet my lovely friend Roz for Sunday lunch. We’re really very lucky to live so close to the Lake District, and Ambleside is a handy halfway-point between our house and Roz’s.

Ambleside is a beautiful little town, just further north than Windemere. Its normally full of walkers, and generally outdoorsy folk, something the vast array of outdoor shops will attest to.

This time, however, we stopped just outside the town at a HUGE garden centre for lunch and proceeded to fill up with hot chocolate and lots of melted cheese based food! The garden centre itself is nestled in amongst the beautiful Lake District hills, which the cafe looks out across.

The highlight for me, though, (apart from catching up with the lovely Roz and Kay!) was that half of the centre had been transformed into Christmas world! Complete with flying reindeer, gnomes galore and more decorations than you could ever need. Christmas peacock, anyone? I love Christmas, winter is my favourite season of the year, so I thoroughly enjoyed wandering round their little wonderland. It’s just a shame we hadn’t had a lottery win to fund some serious Christmas spending!

Positive Thinking

If I’m completely honest I’ve really struggled my way through the past few months. Leaving my job and the following months of unemployment hasn’t helped. I’ve been very down, finding it hard to find motivation to do anything productive with my day (even the mundane tasks like laundry were taking all my energy.)

In order to get myself out of the cycle of no motivation/feeling down/worrying about not doing anything useful with my life I talked to Jonny and my brother, Ben. They were fantastic, and instead of saying I was being a big drama queen/that I needed to sort my life out they’ve been really helpful.  Between them, and with their encouragement I have started making small changes to my days to help improve my mood.

I started by practising Mindfulness. I was sceptical at first about how much this would work, but so far the meditations from this book have been great at helping me find focus and clear my mind. Making me think more rationally about the events in day to day life, has helped put things into perspective for me, which has led to a more relaxed, happy me.

At a suggestion from my brother’s friend I’ve also started keeping a ‘good things diary.’ As cheesy as it sounds, simply writing down anything that has happened during my day that rates 6 out of 10 or higher helps me think of the positives of a day, rather than dwelling on the negatives.  These can be as simple as having a Lush bath bomb filled bath, to going for  a walk or enjoying a hot chocolate in our cute local tea shop.

Making a conscious effort to focus on the positive, instead of the negative has really helped make me happier. It sounds ridiculously simple, but I have to encourage myself to do this every day. As a result I’ve had more motivation, I’m being more creative again (the laundry is getting done!) and there’s definitely a happier mood in our little home!

Playing Outdoors: Feeling Autumnal

Recently we went for a lovely Autumnal walk through our local woods. There were crisp, orange-toned leaves in abundance!

If I’m totally honest, though, the highlight for me was spotting a gorgeous festive holly tree swinging out across the brook. It’s definitely starting to look like Christmas down the woods (and I’m an absolute sucker for anything Christmas! The new John Lewis advert already has me in pieces – Monty!!)
