Changing My Name

R & J

It’s no secret that I’m overexcited about getting married next year although there’s one thing (pain in the backside guest list aside) that has been hard to decide.

Changing my name.

Since I was younger I’d always assumed that I’d keep my last name once I got married. I like Carville and the fact that it isn’t particularly common helps. I like being the only person I know, apart from family, that has this surname. I like that it identifies me.

This assumption has been replaced by a different reality however as it means a lot to Jonny that I’ll take his surname once we get married. I’ve definitely come round to this now, and do like the fact that our children will have the same name as both of us. Double-barreling our names isn’t an option (it sounds ridiculous!) Knowing that it is something important to Jonny made this decision a lot easier. Although I may be cursing him next April when I’m knee deep in paperwork changing my name on everything!

Fortunately, the thought of post addressed to Mr and Mrs Huck makes me smile and is something I’m looking forward to now. Even if Mrs Huck sounds like a serious grown up name and I definitely don’t see myself as a serious grown up at all yet!

What about you? What’re your opinions on keeping/changing your maiden name?

A Bank Holiday In London

Natural History Museum 1

It was Jonny’s 29th birthday over the Bank Holiday weekend so I took him to London for a little birthday trip. He’s a huge David Attenborough fan so I booked tickets to the First Life Virtual Reality experience at the Natural History Museum.

We travelled down on Saturday and spent an afternoon pottering around London before the main event on Sunday. The Attenborough Virtual Reality show was beyond my expectations. With the (riduclous looking) headset on we were treated to a fully 3D show. It was genuinely brilliant.

Post show we then spent the rest of the day exploring the museum itself. If you’ve never been before I urge you to go. It is incredible! I had a fab day getting my fix of dinosaurs and creepy taxidermy. Two of my favourite things. Also, check out how excited the guy in the blue shirt is on the photo of me and the dinosaur. He was obviously loving it as much as me!

The weekend was topped off by dinner with a couple of lovely friends, and a little too much wine. Needless to say, even though we’d had a brilliant little trip, I was grateful once my broken body was finally back home on Monday evening!

Wardrobe Overhaul

Making the most of my summer holiday I decided to tackle the tardis that is my wardrobe. I knew I needed a serious declutter (I couldn’t see half the things on either shelf in my wardrobe.) I started by searching on Pinterest for decluttering ideas, partly because I’m the queen of procrastination, partly because I wasn’t sure quite where to start!

I stumbled across the KonMari technique which is, in a nutshell, sorting through your belongings and looking at each item at a time. They only get kept if they ‘inspire joy.’ I felt like this was a good way to approach clothing. Why keep clothes that aren’t making me happy? Impulse Asos sale purchases I’m looking at you.

The first thing you’re supposed to do is take EVERYTHING out of your wardrobe and drawers. It was whilst doing this that I realised just how many items of clothing/crap I owned. In all honesty, I was a little embarrassed, it really highlighted my weakness for online shopping.

KonMari 3Four hours (FOUR HOURS!) later and I had worked my way through the pile; sorting into keep, donate and eBay piles. I then used this link to help me fold in the special KonMari way so that things take up less storage.

Whilst it was a time consuming process I got a real sense of achievement seeing everything organised (and knowing exactly what was where!) It also pleased my inner Monica Gellar once I could see how neat it all looked.

I now have a shopping list of just the new items I need in my wardrobe and surprisingly there are only a handful of items on it. I’m hoping that by sticking to this I’ll finally have a wardrobe of clothing that actually gets worn. Do you have any decluttering tips or ways to curb impulse spending? I’d welcome any help!

Our Week In Wales

Jonny and I have never had a holiday together longer than 2 or 3 nights so it was great to spend a whole week together at the start of this month. We spent 4 nights in Tenby, followed by 3 nights in Abergavenny.

Highlights included: a whiskey distillery, castles, beautiful beaches, caves, shire horses, spotting seals on a (vomit-y boat trip) and  Lord Hereford’s Knob (a hilariously named hill.

We were (mostly) lucky with the weather. On our one seriously rainy day I was a bit of a sulky child. Rain and I do not get along. Spot my grumpy rain face…

It was so lovely to get away and spend some time exploring places we’d never been before. I think we’ll definitely be heading back to Wales again at some point.
