Wardrobe Overhaul

Making the most of my summer holiday I decided to tackle the tardis that is my wardrobe. I knew I needed a serious declutter (I couldn’t see half the things on either shelf in my wardrobe.) I started by searching on Pinterest for decluttering ideas, partly because I’m the queen of procrastination, partly because I wasn’t sure quite where to start!

I stumbled across the KonMari technique which is, in a nutshell, sorting through your belongings and looking at each item at a time. They only get kept if they ‘inspire joy.’ I felt like this was a good way to approach clothing. Why keep clothes that aren’t making me happy? Impulse Asos sale purchases I’m looking at you.

The first thing you’re supposed to do is take EVERYTHING out of your wardrobe and drawers. It was whilst doing this that I realised just how many items of clothing/crap I owned. In all honesty, I was a little embarrassed, it really highlighted my weakness for online shopping.

KonMari 3Four hours (FOUR HOURS!) later and I had worked my way through the pile; sorting into keep, donate and eBay piles. I then used this link to help me fold in the special KonMari way so that things take up less storage.

Whilst it was a time consuming process I got a real sense of achievement seeing everything organised (and knowing exactly what was where!) It also pleased my inner Monica Gellar once I could see how neat it all looked.

I now have a shopping list of just the new items I need in my wardrobe and surprisingly there are only a handful of items on it. I’m hoping that by sticking to this I’ll finally have a wardrobe of clothing that actually gets worn. Do you have any decluttering tips or ways to curb impulse spending? I’d welcome any help!

  1. I get such satisfaction from a neatly folded clothes drawer. I spent my day off today sorting and folding my pyjama drawer and was sorely tempted to take photos when I’d finished!
